Dear Colleague,

IPPAI takes great pleasure in informing you about our industry-acclaimed Captive power series of conferences, the first of which will be held in Hotel Oberoi, Mumbai on November 12, 2008.

INITATIVE RATIONALE

Towards 24 x 7 Power for India:
It is ironic that while there is almost 50,000 MW of captive, Co-gen and IPP installed capacity which is lying idle, and further there is interest from industry and commercial undertakings to set up medium size generating capacities, the country faces ruinous power cuts for industry, agriculture and consumers across the country, causing billions of dollars of losses to the economy. This initiative looks at what needs to be done for the short and medium term to meet the nation’s power needs.

Addressing Distributed Generation
:
Power from captive sources and distributed generation has become an essential part of meeting energy needs across the country. However, such power is not a solution unless it is consistently generated and accessible at reasonable costs. There is huge potential for increasing power availability by encouraging use of efficient technologies and improved maintenance of distributed power capacities. Gas is the best fuel option for such distributed generation in industrial scale. Further, better utilization of furnace oil based generation capacities can be accomplished on the principal that higher cost power from liquid fuel sources increases the cost to the consumer only marginally since a significantly larger proportion of the power purchased by the power distribution company is low cost power. Once this concept is understood and implementation scales up, a lot more industrial and commercial undertakings shall be ready to set up new medium size power generating capacity, based on gas and heavy furnace oil. This becomes particularly critical in the scenario of coal supply constraints and global rise in cost of coal..

The fuel availability and carbon emission reduction obligation:

In this scenario of shortage, both on electricity and fuel front, efficiency acquires great significance, particularly when efficient use of fuel has potential for lowering the carbon footprint substantially

Aggregating and Harnessing each Mega Watt & Selling Surplus Power:
Each MW is critical to fulfilling India’s dream of constant power. The tools for the efficient utilization of surplus power capacities are open access and a power exchange.

IPPAI has hosted numerous industry acclaimed conferences over many years and has an eminent standing in the Energy industry which will be tapped to generate awareness to encourage distributed generation, in a setting that is informative and interactive.
